How to Check Engine Oil Safely and Read the Dipstick

Checking engine oil is a basic maintenance task, but the correct method depends on the vehicle. Park on level ground and follow the owner’s manual for timing, dipstick use, and approved oil specification.

Read the level correctly

On many vehicles, remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, fully reinsert it, and remove it again to read the level. Keep the oil between the low and full marks. Some newer vehicles use an electronic oil-level display instead.

Use the specified oil

Use only the viscosity and specification listed in the owner’s manual or oil-cap label. Adding the wrong oil can affect engine protection and may not meet manufacturer requirements.

When low oil needs attention

  • Add oil gradually; do not overfill.
  • Investigate repeated low readings.
  • Stop and seek advice if the oil-pressure warning light comes on.

Repeated oil loss, visible leaks, smoke, or an oil warning light can indicate a problem that needs professional diagnosis.
