Pre-Trip Car Maintenance Checklist for a Safer Road Trip

Before setting off on a long drive, make sure your vehicle is ready for the journey. This road trip maintenance checklist covers tire condition and pressure, fluid levels, brakes, lights, battery health, and emergency supplies to help you prepare for safer, more reliable travel.

A road-trip check helps you spot basic issues before they become a roadside problem. Use your owner’s manual for vehicle-specific requirements, especially when towing, carrying heavy loads, or driving in extreme weather.

Check tires

Check cold tire pressure, tread condition, and visible damage. Include the spare if equipped. Use the pressure on the vehicle label, not the tire-sidewall maximum.

Check visibility and warnings

  • Confirm headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and wipers work.
  • Check fluid levels according to the owner’s manual.
  • Address warning lights before leaving when possible.

Prepare for the trip

Carry items appropriate to your vehicle and route, such as a charged phone, emergency supplies, and the tools required for your spare-tire system. Review towing, payload, and roof-load limits before loading the vehicle.
